Tree Canopy Fund

May 5, 2015 |

Did You Know that a shade tree can increase your property value by $8,000–$9,000? In the last 3 years, 100 of your neighbors got a jump on increasing their property values, lowering their A/C bills, and beautifying their yards…just by applying for a free tree, planted at no cost to them.

Arlington County’s Tree Canopy program provides free trees to civic associations. These are not small saplings, but rather seven to eight foot tall trees with high retail value. The coordinator for the applications We are coordinating applications from our neighborhood.

This year the Tree Canopy Fund has less money, so it is targeting certain neighborhoods where they would like to encourage homeowners, local organizations such as churches, and apartment properties to plant more trees. Aurora Highlands is one of their target neighborhoods with low canopy coverage. Unfortunately Arlington Ridge is not on their list.

If your application is not accepted, please consider planting a tree anyway. For what you would spend on a daily latte for a couple of months, you can get a nice shade tree and have it planted by a nursery. You’ll be making a wise investment and improving the neighborhood for generations to come.

Interested? Applications are handled through a coordinator. E-mail or call Natasha Atkins: natashaatkins1@gmail.com. (703)979-2862. We can help you select a tree—whether or not you get one through the Fund—and a place for it in your yard.

Supplies are limited, so act soon to get your applications in.
