SUMMARY:June AHCA *VIRTUAL* Meeting
DESCRIPTION:After the hiatus result from COVID-19\, AHCA will be resuming monthly meetings in June with a virtual online format. Please REGISTER HERE to receive a confirmation email with details about joining the meeting and the option to add a reminder to your calendar. For those unable to use Zoom\, we expect to also stream the event live to Facebook @aurorahighlands (no app or Facebook account required). Our Arlington Ridge and Crystal City neighbors are welcome to join in this meeting as well. \n  \nHave you noticed lately that we are using our sidewalks\, streets\, parks\, and other public spaces in different ways? Or wondering why we aren’t already doing more to make these resources more useful for the neighborhood? Wondering what our fellow neighbor Amazon has been doing during the Covid crisis or how the HQ2/MetPark buildout is going? And what about all of the businesses and restaurants in our area\, many locally owned – how have they been holding up? \nThen join us Wednesday\, 7-9pm for our June meeting\, as we’re fortunate to have a terrific lineup talking about those topics. Each 10-20 minute presentation will be followed by a 10 minute Q&A session. \n  \n\nPhil Myrick\, CEO of Project for Public Spaces (PPS) will be our headliner\, speaking about the value of public spaces (parks\, plazas\, sidewalks\, streets\, etc.) during the recovery\, and how we should be thinking differently about them long-term. We’re very fortunate to have him\, and very timely given all of the changes on tap for this area.\n  \nRead a few recent PPS articles\, “The Recovery Will Happen in Public Space” and “The Ligher\, Quicker\, Cheaper Transformation of Public Spaces” to get a taste of their expertise\, which echoes many of the important goals we’ve identified for the area in our own Livability 22202 work.\n\n  \n\nBrooke Oberwetter\, Head of External Affairs at Amazon will discuss their COVID response in the area\, progress on Met Park buildout and hiring\, and provide a community engagement update.\n  \nHopefully the pile driving for MetPark6/7/8 wasn’t so loud that you didn’t hear the call out to provide your feedback on the initial design concepts for the public space at Met Park or hear that Amazon has been supporting our 23rd street restaurants with massive orders for front line workers.\n\n  \n\nTracy Gabriel\, President of the Crystal City Business Improvement District will round out the presentations with an update on the work they’ve been doing supporting our businesses and the state of businesses in the area.\n  \nIf you’ve been following the news\, you’ll know the BID officially expanded to cover Pentagon City in Aurora Highlands last year. It is expected to be officially renamed National Landing BID soon\, and can begin officially programming in our area starting in July. We look forward to working more closely with them as they introduce their core set of services\, programming\, events and placemaking to all of National Landing\, while continuing to celebrate Crystal City\, Pentagon City and Potomac Yard as unique and distinctive communities.\n\n  \nThis will be AHCA’s first virtual meeting. We expect it to go well\, but there may be hiccups. Our bylaws did not envision virtual meetings\, so we will not be performing any official actions such as making motions and taking votes. If you have an issue that you feel needs to be raised\, please contact an officer afterwards and we’ll discuss with you.

SUMMARY:12th St Development Pre-briefing
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 has changed all of our patterns recently\, including community outreach and awareness of development projects in Arlington County. The County has recently issued an ordinance on public meetings that will limit in-person participation in SPRC\, Planning Commission\, and County Board meetings. Since we in the 22202 zip code may experience the majority of development plans that will come before the Board\, it is important that we all stay informed and make our views known during the early stages of planning. Luckily we have a good partner in JBG Smith. \nIn advance of the expected SPRC meeting to be held by the County on JBG Smith’s development plans for 101 S. 12th Street\, JBG Smith is offering voluntarily an informal briefing open to the public for information purposes and questions. The Crystal City Civic Association is sponsoring this meeting since the development will be done in Crystal City in order to ensure substantial outreach to the community during the COVID-19 crisis which has made face to face meetings impossible. Anyone who plans to attend the virtual SPRC meeting (potentially in July) should plan to attend this virtual meeting. \nJBG will be hosting this virtual meeting on WebEx June 8 from 7-8 pm with a 20-25 minute presentation by JBG Smith followed by a Q and A period. The participation will be by pre-registration only for security purposes and is open to 22202 residents and other invited guests\, including County planners. In order to attend\, please register here.  Registrants who prefer to attend by phone can use the phone number below to call. In the same way that County Board virtual meetings are currently being held on the COVID crisis\, a chat feature will be available to submit questions or comments that will be answered after the briefing.

SUMMARY:Livability Workshop: Open Space
DESCRIPTION:We all know that 22202 is a great place to live.  But for many of us\, the only backyard we have is our neighborhood. With all the new proposed development\, we have an opportunity to reshape what our backyard looks like.  What do we love? What’s missing? What’s not working? Could our open spaces be greener or more attractive?  More inviting or accessible?      \nWe are inviting you to attend a workshop where you can share your experience\, learn about existing and planned open spaces\, and help develop a community vision for Open Space in 22202. \nThis is a part of a resident-led effort to ensure that planning for open space\, as well as for community needs such as schools\, transportation\, and housing affordability\, is holistic\, responsive\, and comprehensive. And we will begin to define priorities for Open Space in the County’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). You can read more about the Livability 22202 Action Plan at http://livability22202.org/  \nThe workshop will focus on discussing ideas for four topics\, with walking tours in the morning and afternoon: \n\nDeveloping a holistic approach to planning Crystal City Parks\nRe-envisioning Virginia Highlands Park as the backyard for the Pentagon City community\nConnecting residents to the natural world and enhancing biodiversity throughout 22202 green spaces\nExploring the possibility for a publicly accessible greenway from Roaches Run Waterfowl Sanctuary along the railroad tracks to the southern end of Crystal City\n\nThe workshop is scheduled for February 22\, from 9am to 3pm\, at the Crystal City Marriott\, 1999 Richmond Hwy (the corner of 20th and Clark Bell).  An informal lunch is included. It will be interactive\, with opportunities to hear from fellow residents who have different experiences and needs for Open Space. \nPlease join us if you can. Space is limited so sign up soon. Please indicate which of the four workshop topics you are most interested in\, and we will do our best to include you in the group you prefer. But in any of the groups\, you will bring your experience to the table and learn from others!

SUMMARY:West Glebe Road Bridge Reconstruction Project Open House
DESCRIPTION:Arlington County staff\, in coordination with colleagues in the City of Alexandria\, will host a drop-in style open house on Wednesday\, Feb. 12\, 2020\, at Gunston Middle School. Stop by anytime between 6 and 8 pm to learn more about the project\, ask questions of staff and provide feedback on bridge cross sections and visual preferences.\n\n\nIf you are unable to attend the open house\, an online feedback form will be available from Feb. 13 through Feb. 27. Arlington staff will also share information and collect feedback at “pop-up” opportunities at activity centers near the project\, including one in Alexandria\, to reach additional community members.\n\n\n\nStatus\nIn Design\nCounty staff are currently working on a bridge design. Staff will seek community feedback on cross sections and visual preferences in February 2020. \nAbout the Project\nBackground\nA routine inspection in fall 2018 uncovered deterioration that required a vehicle weight restriction of 5-tons and closure of the sidewalks in both directions. The southbound lane across the bridge was converted for the exclusive use of people walking and biking. \nCounty staff are developing designs for a bridge that replaces the deteriorated roadway substructure and reuses the existing piers\, which are stable. This reduces impacts to the watershed\, helps reduce project costs and contributes to a shorter construction timeline. \nProject Goals\nThe goals of this project are to: \n\nReturn the bridge to a safe operational condition for all users\nImprove access for people walking\, biking and driving\nAdvance the community vision of the Four Mile Run Master Plan

SUMMARY:Joint CA meeting & panel on Livability
DESCRIPTION:The three 22202 civic associations are joining forces to start off the new year with a joint meeting of great importance to our neighborhood: The Livability Framework and Action Plan\, which provides us a way to tackle the challenges facing our area with holistic strategies based on shared livability themes to create a better\, more livable city. \nThe confirmed agenda is:\n\n1.  Matt Mattauszek on “Beyond Amazon” with a PowerPoint on all the development areas in 22202. \n\n2.  Presentation of the Livability Framework and the Action Plan.  Mike Dowell will again be our main presenter\, with Eric Cassel as Introducer.  The talk will be tailored to our residents in the 3 CAs with more details on the Action Plan and implementation.\n\n3.  Panel on Open Space as an example of how we can implement the LF Action Plan:  JBG Smith Andy VanHorn on the Crystal City parks; Brooke Overdetter of Amazon (unless they send someone else) to talk about community benefits in redesigning the Metropolitan Park; and Tracy Gabriel on how the Livability Framework fits with the BID’s Strategic Plan\, how they did the mapping of Open Space\, and what the BID’s role is with implementing the LF for Open Space.  Brian Harner\, our facilitator for development of the Livability Framework and Action Plan\, will moderate.  The Open Space planning committee decided to focus primarily on the Crystal City parks\, plus Amazon and the Metropolitan Park\, to keep this manageable time wise.  The charette which is being planned for February 22 will cover our larger OpenSpace issues.
