If you can provide some finger foods or drinks\, please arrive a little early.\n School Board Forum on 22202 will be held at Oakridge Elementary School\, March 16\, 7-9 P.M.\nCounty Board approved funding for two Neighborhood Conservation projects in our\nneighborhood. One was to fund the cost over-run of the Fern St. sidewalk project\, which has been stalled for several years. Utility work on Fern St. will begin in the spring\, followed by hardscape in the summer or early fall. The board also agreed to fund renovation at Nelly Custis Park\, though we are not expected to see anything happen on the design phase until the fall or later.\nCounty Board Chair Libby Garvey will be at our April 13 meeting.\nWhole Foods will be opening in Metropolitan Park. Representatives will be at the meeting to answer your questions about the new store.\n\n\nFor Discussion\n\nVote on $250 donation to Oakridge Elementary School for the Spring Fling festival.\nCapital Bikeshare: a representative of Capital Bikeshare will be at the meeting to discuss two proposed locations for new Bikeshare stations in our neighborhood.\nOne is at S. Hayes and 23rd St. S.\, and the other is at S. Fern and Army-Navy Drive. Doors open at 6:30.\n Email president@aurorahighlands.org ASAP if you will need childcare. \n**Note Change In Venue!** : Aurora Hills Library\, Back Room \nMeeting Agenda \n\nIntroductions\nCommunity Updates\n\nRecent Civic Federation vote on Parkland Acquisition resolution\nNext AHCA social event\n\n\nFor Discussion\n\nPlanning for School CapacitySchool Board Member Emma Violand-Sanchez will speak at 7:15; come with your questions.\nBy 2025\, Oakridge Elementary is estimated to have 50% more students than it was built for.  One way the school board is likely to address this issue is through boundary changes.  Another potential way is through building new schools or expanding others.  Our area needs to make our voices heard about how we want the school board to address these capacity issues.  Right now\, the school board is in the process of formulating its Capital Improvement Plan\, which is the process by which it decides where in Arlington it will spend money for construction and building improvements for the next 10 years.  Without more community involvement\, we will lose our voice in the decision-making process.  We need to advocate now for money to be spent in our area for 2025 and beyond. \nIf these issues are important to you\, please Come to the AHCA meeting on Wednesday and \ncontact Rob Sidman at recordingsecretary@aurorahighlands.org to join the AHCA Schools Committee and learn more about what you can do to help.  We are putting together a group to strategize with our sister civic associations in 22202 about the most effective advocacy.\nProposal for a New Vision of Virginia Highlands ParkFunding is already in place for design replacement of the west side of VHP\, with construction anticipated in 2017–2018. The County is expected to allocate funds to redo the two softball fields along Joyce St. With so much of VHP dedicated to recreational fields and courts\, now is the time to consider whether the west side should be redeveloped so that it benefits all residents.\nAn AHCA subcommittee has drafted a proposal to restore balance to VHP by transforming the west side into a vibrant public park with creatively designed open green space. The vision is a park that would accommodate the broad constituency represented in our diverse and rapidly growing population\, and would benefit the neighborhood and the County in a multitude of ways. \nThis is not a proposal for a specific park design. It is to replace the exclusive softball fields on the west side with a different sort of community park. DESCRIPTION:This meeting was rescheduled from the original January 27th date to accommodate cleanup from the recent weather event and to ensure that the public has the opportunity to provide input. \nThe Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) invite you to attend a community meeting for the Long Bridge Phase II Study: \nWednesday\, February 10\, 2016 \n4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.\n L’Enfant Plaza Club Room\, Promenade Level\n470 L’Enfant Plaza\, SW\, Washington\, DC\n L’Enfant Plaza Metro and VRE Station \nThe community meeting will provide the public an opportunity to express their views on the possible replacement or rehabilitation of the Long Bridge across the Potomac River in Washington\, DC. The existing two-track rail bridge was constructed in 1904 and serves freight (CSX Transportation)\, intercity passenger (Amtrak)\, and commuter rail (Virginia Railway Express) traffic. The community meeting will focus on recent project activities\, next steps in the planning process\, and provide a general overview of the environmental resources which have been identified within the project corridor. \nDDOT completed an initial (Phase I) feasibility study of the Long Bridge in January 2015\, which conducted a preliminary evaluation of various concept designs for upgrading the existing bridge\, identified opportunities for multimodal connectivity and operational improvements\, and determined existing and future capacity needs of the bridge. \nThe Long Bridge Phase II Study\, currently underway\, is expanding on the information from Phase I to advance the project through the initial stages of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process. FRA and DDOT anticipate that an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) will be prepared for the project. DESCRIPTION:Review of final design for a proposed Neighborhood Conservation Street Improvement project for S Fern Street from 19th to 22nd Streets S. \nThe project is a pedestrian safety improvement proposed to include the installation of curb\, gutter and sidewalk on the west side of Fern Street (the side currently without sidewalk) along with a grass utility strip in between the sidewalk and the street.
