Water Park Plans Being Revised
JBG Smith submitted plans for a redesign of the Water Park as a Minor Site Plan Amendment, which meant that the proposal went directly to the County Board with no prior County-sponsored community engagement. The proposal was pulled from the consent agenda for the January 23rd Board meeting. and several community members and transportation advocates presented comments at the January 26th meeting. Topics addressed were the safety hazard of the proposed staircase that ended just outside of the Crystal City Connector, inadequate sidewalk and tree planting dimensions along Crystal Drive, major tree loss, and other points of conflict between VRE riders and cyclists. After a non-productive discussion, the County Manager proposed having the relevant committees/commissions discuss the proposal with JBGS, then bring back recommendations that can be addressed again by the Board at their March 20th meeting.
At the request of the County Manager, the Pedestrian Advisory Committee (PAC) hosted the initial County-sponsored public forum for discussion of the JBGS Water Park plans. The meeting recording and slide decks are available here, PAC minutes are here. The Park & Recreation Commission hosted a continuation of the public discussion of Water Park plans during their meeting on Tuesday, February 16. The PRC Meeting Recording is here; the Water Park discussion starts at 1hr, 17 min.
We are awaiting the final plans, but the problematic staircase has been removed, and the sidewalk clear zone has been extended to 10’, according to the presentation at the PRC meeting.
