Proposed height increase for large media signs

[ 0 ] March 26, 2019 |

A proposed change to the zoning ordinance would allow large signs up to 55 feet, up from 40 feet in the current ordinance. Signs would still require approval and various requirements on placement and visibility from residential zones. The ordinance would apply to “urban regional shopping centers”, which currently includes Pentagon City Fashion Centre and Ballston Quarter.

THE FOLLOWING CASE TO BE HEARD BY PLANNING COMMISSION (April 8) AND COUNTY BOARD (April 23):

ZOA-2019-04 Amendments to Arlington County Zoning Ordinance (ACZO) §13.13.4, to allow large media screen signs to be installed at up to 55 feet in height at urban regional shopping centers, as defined in ACZO §18.2, in accordance with the placement standards specified in §13.8.3.E, and to reformat the existing opening paragraph in §13.13.4 into separate sections for a purpose statement, authority for County Board approval, criteria for County Board approval, and use standards.
